On the Typological (and therefore deeply Existential) Significance of the Winter Solstice

Well, that's at least the title of an essay I'm tempted to write, inspired by the concluding tracks of _Songs for Christmas_ by Sufjan Stevens (the movement from "Jupiter Winter" to "Winter Solstice" is amazing). If you're like me and, despite your past interest in and attention to science, you get confused every year about just how this stuff works, then you might find this overview of the solstice helpful. Of course, explicit discourse would kill the effect, so an essay would be a miserably bad idea. Instead, just go buy this music.
